On September 30, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities. This day invites us to listen, learn, reflect, and deepen our understanding of the lasting impacts of colonialism while supporting the ongoing journey toward reconciliation. 

 

There are several opportunities in Greater Victoria to commemorate this important day. Community members can attend the South Island Powwow at Royal Athletic Park, hosted by Songhees Nation, which celebrates Indigenous culture, resilience, and community through traditional song and dance.

 

The Victoria Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters Ceremony at Centennial Square features Indigenous performances, guest speakers, and moments for reflection and remembrance.

 

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is also offering free admission, welcoming visitors to engage with Indigenous artwork and reflect on the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools.

 

We encourage everyone to wear orange, take time to learn from Indigenous voices, and participate in local events that foster understanding, respect, and meaningful reconciliation.
